Eleven students enrolled in advanced level sculpture courses under the direction of Professor Billy Lee in the Department of Art at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro teamed up with individuals in the Glenwood Neighborhood to create a sculpture park. Glenwood individuals expressed an interest in revitalizing their neighborhood in a way that would include art with Professor Nikki Blair who is also a faculty member in the Art Department. The eleven student participants include, Aaron Chavda, Brian Hupfeld, Cade Bromley, Craig Johnson, Dan Huckabee, Heather Kelly, King Intahong, Kyle Thompson, Elizabeth Burkey, Mary Cox and David Smith were eager to participate in the project and enthusiastically produced eleven sculptures of varying dimensions and materials which were approved by the neighborhood for permanent installation.
We followed this project from conception to creation. The ideas were accompanied with research, models and proposals to the community. After the initial feedback, we fine tuned our pieces and began construction. As of December 11, 2007 the Glenwood Community Garden was open to the public.
The project has been a pilot program for the UNCG art department to test the interest in creating public work. In the coming months we are planning to install more art down the length of Grove Street. There are also plans to talk with the Greensboro City Council and Greensboro Parks and Recreation about installing art in public parks within the city.
